Duncan Powell Interview 004

Just Garage speaks to one of the best producers/remixers around at the moment, Duncan Powell.

1) How would you describe the uk garage scene at the moment?

You know what, you'll get a different answer on that one every time when you ask that question! right now, id'e say its going through bad times, things are very very slow. There's no focus, nothing to aim for, sales are at an all time low. Most people don't seem to want to pay for music. Is it all related to the credit crunch? maybe!

All I know is that musically, there's some great stuff being made, but hardly any of it is getting released. That's not a good stage to be at. Something needs to change, but I don't know what. Is making music free the way to go? maybe for the artists, but then it would kill off shops on the flip side. It all gets a bit too deep when you start thinking like that!

2) You've been largely involved in the uk garage scene for a long time now, how has garage music changed now from when you first broke into the scene?

I guess it has been a good few years now! I still feel relatively new to it! The actual music itself hasn't majorly changed. The only thing that's changed really is the quantity of music and the level of exposure/promotion. Since Karl left choice and Matt left kiss there was a massive downturn in enthusiasm for the producers I think, we are only left with EZ holding the flag on a legal station. Only 1 major outlet for tracks to be played and heard.

3) What's the next Duncan Powell Release going to be?

I'm not sure what will be next, I'm in talks with a few labels, but with the way releases are at the moment, I'm not sure what is round the corner!

4) Are there any collaborations forthcoming from yourself with any others producers or artists involved within the scene?

Me & Sol keep talking about making another collab, that one will happen for definite!

5) We've had so many top quality releases from yourself over the years, what's your personal favorite?

Firstly, thanks for the compliment! My favorite.... hmm, either "Funk Drop" on Solo, "Whenever" - the collab with Artifact, or "Highly Effective" on the MRP summer collections Ep

6) What's your all time favorite UKG tune?

I don't have one... I have about 300!! there have been so many great records and so many personal favorites.... if I had to pick one... Angie Stone - Life Story - Booker T Dub. Never get bored of playing it and it has so much energy!

7) What's happening with the Duncan Powell radio show at the moment?

Currently on Hiatus! I love doing radio and find that it gives you something to make new tracks for, however I needed my Sundays back! for 5 years, every Sunday was spent driving to and from radio, and bring based outside of London, that's a lot of motorway driving! Subjam was a 5 & 1/2 hour round trip for me and as much as I loved it, I needed an extended break so left in January this year. I am going to be back on a regular show again soon, details will announced shortly!

8) If you could personally change one thing about the uk garage scene, what would it be?

Id love for there to be a big enough market for the music that gets made to get the recognition it deserves. If we can get back to the days of selling 500-800 records that would be awesome.

9) Finally what's inspired you to start your own personal blog?

I'm a music fan/collector more than I am a dj/producer. I love music, and I'm constantly checking out new tracks. I want to share with friends and anyone else who cares the tracks/bands/remixes I discover along the way and hopefully increase exposure to them along the way. If one person likes a track they hear on my blog then goes and buys the album then it was worth while! I also will be able to look at the blog in a year or so's time and enjoy rediscovering forgotten music!

MC Supplier Interview 003

Just Garage speaks to True Fm's Mc Supplier, the man behind events such as Pure Temptation, Nookie, So True and Raunchy.

1) How would you describe the garage scene at the moment?

It's far from how it used to be although right now things are looking bright. I feel a new Garage craze is begining again, so fingers crossed for this time next year, or maybe even later this year!

2) Is there still a big following for the garage sound at the events your putting on?

Unfortunatly the answer to that is probably no not really, it seems to be mainly all the commercial house stuff really! Although any big Garage tune of now days standerdly gets played and goes down a storm, but there's just not simply enough good, big garage club smashers getting made now days, Therefore if you cant stand to listen to any more old skool everytime you go out and want to hear something new then seven times out of ten it's along the house/electro road. Not an ideal situation for our scene i know!!!

3) Whats it like working with one of the original pioneers of the garage sound DJ Luck?

Ever since 'Raise it up' a couple years back we've become good friends from travelling to perform all over the world together. So now when we go in the studio it's alot more relaxed and more fun. I always like to work with Luck as commercially, in our scene him and Neat have probably had some of the biggest success and he's got some great idea's on what will work and what can potensionally turn into a hit!

4) Is there an official release date yet for the DONT GIVE A LUCK tune?

No not at the moment, it's only us 2 playing it, we havent given it to anyone yet. The idea is to make it as big as possible over the summer at all the holiday destinations and then see what happens from there!

5) Aside from DJ LUCK, are you working with any one else in the near future?

Yeah i have a few projects i'm working on. Firstly with the lady of the moment Lauren Mason, got something coming with me and Kenzie from Celebrity big Brother, and also a tune with my sister Faith. Sticky has also just done a mix of 'Baby Boy' a tune i've done with True fm's Nikki S & Nyke!

6) You recently done an event at the carling academy, with an all drum and bass line up, are there any plans for a 100% garage event in the near future?

I love all genders of dance music and i come from the garage scene, so yes if i feel the situation arises and i have that oppertunity in front of me and a club that will actually allow it then yes, defo!

7) Whats your PERSONAL preferences:

House or Garage? Both

Both 2step and 4x4 or Bassline? 2step really, i'm not massively into the bassline thing at the moment.

8) Which radio sets do you try and lock into on a regular basis?

I am so so busy and my life has absolutly no routine or regular sleep pattern, so i only ever get to hear who ever is on at the time!

9) Which djs, mc, producers and artists in your opinion are smashing the circuit at the minute?

Dj's: any one from True 100.2fm.
Producers: Luck, Danny Dubbz, Danny C,
Artists: Lauren Mason is the girl of the moment! 2Ton, Nikki S & Nyke, Darren Martin

10) What made you want to get into the world of dj'in, mc'in, promoting, radio etc?

Thats the easiest question so far - I LOVE MUSIC!

11) What advice can you give to anyone whose looking to follow a similar path in life?

If you are prepared to work your arse off then you can achieve anything!

Just Garage would like to thank Mc Supplier for taking time out to conduct this interview. Good luck with future projects! Check out www.myspace.com/mcsupplier for more information or keep it locked to www.truefm.net every wednesday and friday between the hours of 2pm & 6pm. DJ Charma Interview 002

Just Garage talks to one of the pioneers of the modern day UK Garage scene, The man behind the Stereohype Recordings label: DJ Charma

First off, how would you describe the garage scene at the minute?

First off from me, big up the Just Garage family, always good to see new web & blog sites dedicated to the scene we all know and love!

UKG is at a bit of a funny stage at the moment. You’ll be amazed how many different opinions I hear about it. The main reason for that is due to how many names people have given our music over the last couple years. On one hand one of those names could be perceived as doing really well, but on the other hand another could be seen as going a lot slower. The frustration from my point of view is that it’s still all under the umbrella of UK Garage so there’s no need to go off creating new brands!

The scene has always been diverse, as it is now, and which ever name people give it we always seems to come back to that original tag of ‘Garage’, as that’s what the public want. The scene is at a unique stage right now and I think we could all do with listening to the public a bit more closely. We’d all be a lot better for it that’s for sure.

The great thing is that Garage is as exciting as it has been for a good few years. A number of producers are remixing for a lot of new artists which is always a good sign of how thriving a scene is. There have been more CD compilations and tracks getting signed in the last 6 months then the last few years put together, and the recent chart successes have all helped to put UKG back on people’s minds again. It’s an exciting time that’s for sure.

* Secondly, What does the future hold for both yourself as a DJ and for the Stereohype label?

The DJ side is going real well. I probably enjoy it more than I have done for a few years as I’m now able to go to most places and play the music I play on my radio shows. Up until recently I wouldn’t be able to play the latest remix hot off mixing desks like DJs used to in the good old days, but now with the exposure of the scene recently the club reactions are the same, if not bigger, than the classic garage tracks from 10 years ago. It’s been a long time coming, but the shift back to fresh music in garage is definitely happening, and that makes being on the decks so much more enjoyable.

As for Stereohype, the Label is 3 years old in 2008 so it really is just the beginning. We’ve come a long way in a short space of time and I’ve developed the label to act as more of ‘Partner’ for other new garage rather than just a single label. There are now over 15 labels that work closely with Stereohype in getting new music out to the street, and often I treat all the other labels in the same way as I treat my own. I’m proud to be involved with so many different artists and producers, and I really feel the ‘community spirit’ is what Stereohype is all about. There is so much more to come that’s for sure!

* Thirdly, who in your opinion should the readers keep an eye out for in the future in terms of artists, producers, mc’s, dj’s etc

Artist & producer wise look out for a 3rd MJ Cole album at the end of 2008 – MJ is back in the lab over the next couple months with a load of great vocalists and I can’t wait to hear what they put together. Midnight Circus are currently under the microscope of major labels who are just waiting for the right time to pounce on them, so keep an eye on them, and a load of producers such as Danny Dubbz, Control-S, and One Dark Martian just continue to develop their own awesome sounds.

DJ and MC wise, keep an eye on DJ Kane and DJ Burns. Both of them have skills and know how to get the dancefloors bubbling. Majestic is my man on the mic, his gig guide is looking really healthy, unlike the size of his belly!

* If you were to release a ‘Best Of Stereohype” EP which tracks would be featured on there?

Good question, can I have a double pack?

Alright 4 tracks. Even though it’s not come out yet, MJ’s remix of Just a Dream would feature, alongside the 2-step mix of Love On The Rocks, the original mix of Complicated, ODM’s vocal mix of Crazy, or due to the amount of support its getting right now, one of the mixes of You’re The One.

I’m liking this idea, may have to put that EP together one day…

* Through the label, you’ve released tracks from artists such as: Midnight Circus, Mr Pud, Duncan Powell, Danny Dubbz to name a few, who would be the one artist/producer you haven’t currently been involved with that you’d like to get involved with in the future?

Funny you ask as I was thinking only last week of producers I’ve not been involved with yet. I’ve been talking to Ez recently about him going back in the studio, and once he finds time away from updating the speed camera feature on his TomTom, he’s promised he’ll be back on it. We’ve already spoken about Stereohype being involved which would be great, and I’ve always wanted to get Wookie to remix a track on my label so we’ll see what happens there.

* Finally have you got any advice for people out there, who are looking at starting their own independent label?

The key is to find a few artists you can focus your label around rather than just finding a track you like and sticking it out. A lot easier said then done of course, but you’ll be surprised how many talented vocalists and musicians you can find out there. Attend open mic nights over a few beers and keep your eyes peeled to sites like MySpace. It’s very important you have a good product to take to the scene. Play it to a few of your girly mates first. If they like it then you’re probably on the right track!

Once you feel you have a product you can market, test it out with a few of the named DJ’s – most of them are contactable by email these days. Don’t be afraid of going to their gigs and talking to them either. You’ll be surprised how much notice is given to people who visibly make the extra effort to get their music heard. I once had someone waiting for me outside a club in Russia who walked through the snow and managed to get in the same taxi to spend the next 10 minutes telling me why the CD he was about to give me would be the next big thing on Stereohype. I still remember his face!

The money aspect is a minor because you can get a small loan knowing that all the reactions of the EP so far means you’re confident that it will sell out there, so the loan can be re-paid easily. Get to know a distributor who has a good reputation and knows how the scene works, and then once you let your product go, tell your artist to get back in the studio and get making the next big hit. Big Labels aren’t created by one release, they take a good handful and a lot of time and dedication, but believe me, it’s also a lot of fun!

Just Garage would like to thank DJ Charma for answering our questions and wish him the best of luck in all future projects. Lauren Mason Interview 001

Just Garage Catches up with the Lady of the moment: Lauren Mason

1) Whats your opinion on UK Garage music in general?

I love garage music! In my opinion the best years for me musically were the old school garage days! Every tune was an anthem! I think that 2 step garage is sooo under rated! We should deffo bring it back. For me garage music reminds me of when music was about good vibes and having nothing but FUN!

2) You've worked with a few bassline producers recently, however ive heard that bassline isnt really a genre that greatly interests you. Does this apply to garage music aswell, or just the sub-genre of bassline?

If i am being honest its not that i dont like bassline but as a singer i find it really hard to write melodys to it! When i do write songs i have to get a vibe from the instrumental and when i get that vibe the concept speaks for itself... I have only ever recorded to 1 bassline track and that's "Gonna Get You" Produced by Wittyboy and Featuring JME.
And the reason why i found this so easy to do was Witty put an amazing salsa melody in there which kind of took my mind away from the madness off the actual bassline sounds!
Every other Bassline track with my vocals on has been a remix. I would make garage however alll daaaay looooong!

3) Youve worked with some of the leading names within the grime scene, terror danjah, bless beats and scorcher to name a few, would you consider working with producers from the garage scene on a track?

Funny you should say that because i am about to do a project with Artful Dodger! So excited to get that track done! Also i am working on something with Danny C (AIM RECORDS) and there's talk of a little Dj Luck, MC Supplier and LM Collab! woop woop Im real excited!

4) Whens the KEEPING IT BLONDE album being released?

We are hoping for end of June! I know everyone thinks that im soooo long so i will set the story straight with you guys. My CD has been completed since AUG 07! It was a mixtape at first but then i had loads of problems with distribution and stuff (people say they can help and dont)... In december i was approached by someone that saw potential in the CD and asked if they could help turn it into an album! Obviously the whole cd had to be mastered, some tunes were re done and arranged different... and as everyone knows thats a massively time consuming task! However the sound of the album compared to how it was is amazing and i cant wait for it to be out! I know people are waiting for it but please let them know it is fully out of my hands!

5) Whats your favourite track off of the album?

Agggh there are a few that conceptially mean alot to me! But if i had to chose it would be between "Caught me" or "Female Hustler" ft Little Dee! Both tracks are really fun! And i had the upmost fun recording them.

6) After the release of the album, what can we expect in the future from yourself?

Well im currently working on my 2nd Album which i fully intend to push myself to the next level as a singer but most importantly as a songwriter! Im going to go where no other girl in grime has gone before! I am also featured on a few other projects such as Sway and Bruza's album, Hardrive Vol2 by Terror Danjah, if im bein honest i have forgot most of them but i have done alot of work in the past year! Also look out for the Lauren Mason & Shabba D Collab - That track excites me! hehehe

7) Finally, which artists, mc's, dj's and producers should we keep an eye out for during the rest of 2008 + beyond?

Producer wise look out for Handz! (www.myspace.com/handzartist) My 17 year old wizz kid! Also make sure you check out LOUDMOUTH in my opinion one of the UK's hottest unsigned Rappers! Go to his myspace and download Part 1 of his new mix cd 55 freestyles! (www.myspace.com/loudmouthuk)
